Figure 26-22: Logic associated with the "LSR Received" input event Finally, with the full state, as long as an input event is not received, nothing really needs to be done except send hellos every hello interval (which isn't shown in the figures to reduce the complexity) If the SPF tree has not yet been computed since the last change, the router computes the tree here as well Note Computing the SPF tree can take significant processor resources in a large area What if several events were received in succession (such as with a link that rapidly changes state due to problems, a condition known as route-flap), each causing a change to the linkstate database (and therefore causing an SPF computation) Then processor use could rise to levels high enough to cause errors or packet loss To reduce the possibility of this happening, Cisco routers employ a feature called SPF holdtime that (by default) does not allow more than one SPF computation in a ten-second interval If an input event occurs, SPF performs different actions depending on the event type If an interface fails, OSPF removes all neighbors known through that interface, modifies LSAs as necessary, and floods the changed LSAs in an LSU to all remaining neighbors (The flooding process also takes into account LSU acknowledgment, as shown in Figures 26-19 through 2622) Note A few types of events can occur that are not listed in Figure 26-15, but the most important events are covered For a full discussion of OSPF, check out Routing TCP/IP: Volume 1 by Jeff Doyle (Cisco Press, 1998), and OSPF: Complete Implementation by

John Moy (Addison-Wesley, 2000) the man many consider to be the father of OSPF; or check out the primary RFC for OSPF, located at ftp://ftpisiedu/in-notes/rfc2328txt The next two input types are fairly simple If the router ID of the router changes, the router must reset OSPF entirely (which is one of the primary reasons you should manually set the router ID); and if a neighbor's hello is not heard before the dead interval expires, the router transitions that neighbor to init The last two event types, although complicated looking, are actually fairly simple If an LSU is received, the router examines the LSU to see if any new LSAs are included If not, the router simply sends an LSAck back to the LSU originator If there are new LSAs in the LSU, the router updates all adjacent neighbors; sends an LSAck to the originating router, if necessary; and waits for LSAcks from all routers to which it sent an LSU Notice that the SPF computation process happens after the router updates its neighbors This is a useful feature because it means that delays caused by the SPF calculation have minimal effect on the transmission of LSUs If an LSR is received, the router responds in almost exactly the same manner as it did in the loading state, sending LSUs as necessary and waiting for acknowledgments in response One new logic step has been added to the diagram in Figure 26-22, however, that wasn't present in Figure 26-18 If the router receives an LSR for an LSA that is not listed in his link-state database, it means an error has occurred, and he transitions back to exstart This problem occurs in the loading state as well but to reduce complexity, it was left out of the diagrams Now that you understand the core logic behind OSPF, let's examine how OSPF responds to changes Dealing with Changes One of the obstacles OSPF's designers had to contend with is how to deal with changes to LSAs If a router receives an LSA, and that LSA is already present in the link-state database, how does the router know which LSA to trust The primary method OSPF uses is sequence numbers Each time the LSA is modified, its sequence number is incremented by 1 Therefore, the basic idea is that LSAs with higher sequence numbers are more recent There are several problems with using sequence numbers as the method of determining which LSA is the most recent First, the sequence number space cannot be infinite If it were, in an older OSPF network, the entire sequence number for a single LSA has the potential to completely fill a 1,500-byte packet's payload! What good is that So, if sequence numbers can't be infinite, you have a choice of creating a circular sequence number space or a flat sequence number space With a flat sequence number space, the sequence number eventually reaches the maximum allowable number In this case, the LSA is invalid forever (well, until the maxage expires, but I'll get to that in a moment) So, what if you make the sequence number space circular With a circular space, once the sequence number reaches the maximum configured number, it "flips" back over to 0 This, however, leads to a fault in logic I mean, if the number flips at the maximum number, then 45 is greater than 0, but 0 is also greater than 45!.
